Greets, all! Kinda hate for this to be my first post, but I'm working on this mod on an F800R. At the moment, it's a complete fail. I can't get the fabric outer half free from the inner half to save my life. It appears from the photos that the F8R bags are the mirror image of the ones shown or some variation on that. I say this because the screws I find are like this: On the left bag (which is cut out to clear the muffler) there are three screws in the hinge area and one much shorter one in the bag cavity. The three in the recess are completely inaccessible other than with a right-angle screwdriver. In the right bag, all four are in that recess, also requiring the 90 degree screwdriver. My problem is that even with all four screws removed (from the left bag; I haven't tried the right), nothing is loose from anything else. I have removed the torx screws that free the fore and aft attachment to the outer plastic pieces. But as it is, I can't see any way to remove the metal hoop from the hinge area so that the outer shell and soft fabric bellows part can be pulled free from the hard plastic bits.

I've read the thread twice, and studied the photos, and will do so again, but certainly would appreciate some guidance.

thanks much for this pointer. I just stumbled onto this . I really like the black panniers and what is MORE, I really like that Husqvarna Nuda 900 . The Ducati HyperMotard look and style has been growing on me and my only hope was for a good BMW version. This Husky looks awesome !!

Anyone look into the Eka suggested (Husky Nuda part) route of installing that Nuda pannier on a K13 ?

I got a large soft sport bag 2 or whatever BMW calls it based on a suggesion from TWUK. Excellent suggestion.
Only issue it's not something you ride around with every day. The convenience of having these sleek black panniers on there whenever you unexpectedly might need carrying space is great.

I can't believe that the F800's cases differ that much in assembly from the K12's cases? I had to review the pics, to refresh my memory, as to how I took these things apart! Here are the steps as I remember them:
1. Remove the 2 little torx screws and spacers from inside the case
2. Swing the black case protectors out of the way, revealing the inner hinge screws. On the K12 cases, they swung completely out of the way, providing good access to the screws, which I removed with a straight phillips-head screwdriver. Possibly you will need to use more force and pressure to get your F800 case protectors out of the way?
3. The grey case lid and black protector grid can now be removed, as a single assembly
4. Finally work the hinge apart. It is a friction fit, metal rod, held in place by alternating plastic tabs. I took a lot of care in doing this, not using much force, so as not to break the plastic tabs. It was fiddly, but once you 'get it' they will just fall apart.
5. Now you have just the grey lid (and the expanding vinyl attached) as a single piece, ready for painting.

So, did you take the fabric shell loose from the metal hoop? The gent who did this on another F800 took the hoop and shell loose from the plastic inner and outer, leaving the hoop in place for support during painting. I just can't figure out how to free the hoop/fabric hinge from the main hinge. Thanks!

The expandable 'fabric' (what I called vinyl) section stays attached to the lid (grey) portion. When properly taken apart, you will have two pieces; the black rear portion of the case, with the black case protector still attached, and the grey top/lid portion of the case with the expandable fabric portion still attached. The fabric is permanently sewn to the lid, I don't believe that it can be removed. I taped off the fabric, which was a huge pain (tape doesn't want to stick), when I painted the case' lids.

As far as removing the fabric/upper hinge, from the main hinge, it too was a pain! If you swing the hinge, open to closed, at a certain point in the travel, it will be easier to separate the parts. You will have to bend some of the plastic tabs, just slightly, to get the two pieces apart. All of the tabs simply will not line up, for separating. Here is the pic that you want to focus on:

What does removing the screws in the hinge recess do to make that happen? I don't find anything "loose" with those screws removed.

With the 4 phillips head screws removed from the hinge area, now the case lid (grey) with the black case protectors (black w/BMW logo) attached can be separated from the black case base. So you should have the case separated into two parts; the grey top with the the protector still attached, and the black bottom portion. To separate the black case protector from the grey lid, you will need to pull apart the metal rod/hinge assembly, from the previous pic I re-posted. Sorry I wasn't clearer, with my previous post. I had to go back and re-read my how to, to refresh my own memory.

When I removed the case protector, from the lid, to paint it, I re-attached the protector portion to the black case base, so the pic of the case bottom, with the protector attached, confused me.

Thanks for the info. I struggled with it some more last night, but still can't get the two halves apart to even attempt to remove the grey bits from the outer protector. I think what I may try is to see if I can get the right bag apart. If I'm successful, and can see how they separate, I might figure out where to "encourage" the left bag. Wish me luck.

Okay, Success!

I finally had a chance to follow my instincts and try the right side, since I was having problems with the left. Now, remember, for me, this was on an F800R, so the screws appear to be the opposite of the pictures.

Here's the drill as I figured it out:

With the bags on the bike, first remove the screws located fore and aft that connect the outer protective "ribs" to the fabric covered lids.

"Close" the lids, but allow the ribs to fold down. Now you have access to the screws shown in the OP's pictures. These are easily accessed at the bottom; just lift the fabric part up. There will be four in the recess on one side, three on the other, with the fourth being inside the bag. Once you have those screws out, "open" the lid again, and lower the combination of the lid and the ribs. The combined weight should cause the flat bottom piece to move down from the inner shell. That piece fits into a groove in the back of the inner shell. If it all doesn't fall off, you may need to push inboard a little to disengage the two halves.

If it still doesn't come apart (which the left one did not for me), this may be the problem: The U-channel "mount" that engages the tubular pannier support on the bike may have been adjusted such that the flat piece can't move inboard and come off the inner shell. Loosen the two T-30 screws inside the bag and wiggle the mount, and you should get the two apart. This step may need to be done with the bag off the bike.

Now, the metal "hoop" that supports the fabric half is held into the hinge at the bottom center by a loop that engages tabs in the hinge. To get that loop loose from the hinge so that you can take the fabric half apart from the ribs, take the bag, turn it upside down in your lap. Now, if you rotate the flat piece that engaged the inner half, you'll see the point at which there is the least interference with the metal loop. With it in that positon, push the hoop toward the hinge. It will come free, and you can maneuver it around the retainer and off.

Just got my cases back together yesterday after using the Duplicolor flat black paint and black vinyl dye. They look fantastic. Thanks for the writeup.
I didn't do anything special as far as surface prep, just wiped down carefully with alcohol; it seems that the paint sticks very well to the soft case material.
Everything dried very quickly even with the fairly cool temperature in my garage. I had to open the door part way despite the freezing temperature outside - that paint really stinks!

I was thinking about where to fit some red reflective tape on the sides of the cases, like maybe on the vertical 'straps'. The letters in red would look better though.
I'll have to figure out how to make some stencils.

I was thinking of getting them sometime and was curious as to how they would look with the 3 upper squares in blue and the lower in white, or vice versa.
Also, if anybobdy is very good with photoshop and gets bored, that'd be of great help

Painting the cases, in different colors is definitely do-able, with some well placed masking, and having the 'joints' where the colors meet, fall under the case protectors. How about alternating white and blue, to mimic the BMW roundel? Meaning white/blue/white on top and blue/white/blue on the bottom or vice-versa? I am not sure how this would look?! It might make your bike look like a police bike or a European taxi cab? lol I am no good at photoshop, but I would love to see a rendering!

Yes it's paint, because my photoshop was expired..
I know it looks like a 10 year old's work, but it's the best I could do while at work(my mouse precision isn't that good at sea )
I thought it would look better with blue on top, but now that I saw it, I'm definitely getting white on top.
PS; that alternate really makes it look bavarian

I like the white on top too, as it matches the color scheme of the bike. I suspect you may have problems getting vinyl-compatible paint to match the Lupin blue (if that's the correct code...Pacific blue?). Don't care for the alternate squares. Too busy.
