Sports Tourers To S1000RR !!!

Postby appletaxi on Sun Oct 02, 2011 1:52 pm

Hi Guys
Just bought a S1000RR a week ago,had sports tourers for the last 12 years,ZZR ,K1300s ,Hayabusa, Blackbirds,Im struggling a bit
with the pressure on the wrists superb bike all round apart from that, has anyone done similiar change and does it get any better
with time or do you just have to put up with the pain, also tried the Airhawk 2 on the bike very comfortable but puts even more weight
on the wrists by being even higher so not a lot of good.
Thanks AT

Exactly my point also (as we have discussed this earlier), you should support your upper body completely with knees on tank and front part of feet on pegs, with no load on your wrists, it makes bike handling and throttle control more refined :D Agreed, this is hard during longer rides....
I´ll take an S1000RR if i can have heated grips on it

Hi Guys
Thanks for replys going to try some of your comments, also you can get heated grips I have some on mine,
they are called HOT HANDS made by OXFORD MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTS, and cost about £45 pounds, they wrap around the
existing grips with velcro ,then in the warmer weather just take them off they work great used them for about 4 years on
different bikes.
Thanks Neil

Yes, I have the Helibars on mine. Although they are in the same spot when they mount to the triple clamp, the end of the bar is up and out from the standard. The change is enough to take the stress out of my wrists. Highly recommended. Easy install, all holes already drilled, no repositioning of cables or wiring necessary. Before and after pics of the bike do not really show the difference, here is a picture of the stock vs Helibar next to each other on the shelf - standard part in front, Helibar behind

Took me longer to find the torque spec for the triple tree nut on the Internet than it did to fit the bars. All told about 45 minutes, including taking pictures. Follow their instructions, they are explicit and concise, makes the swap easy.

I second the Heli-bars. I wussed out though, I ordered them with the bike and had the dealer install them before I picked it up. You will find that the grips are connected to the switch pods, so you don't have to worry about cutting the left one off and all that.
Here's some pics from when I put Superbike grips on mine.

that plastic tube is what the rubber of the grip is actually bonded to, and it all comes off in one piece.
If you decide to change grips as well, you don't have to hacksaw the tube off like I did. Shave off that beveled ring at the end with a sander or blade, and slide what ever grip you want over it. I learned that when I did the throttle side.

Yes.

Also, you will notice a screw hole in the sleeve near the switch pod. That screw needs to be removed as well to do the swap (left grip only). Just peel back the grip right there, and you will expose the phillips head screw.

Hope that helps!

Although my S1KRR has the stock bars, I did change the bars on my CBR1000RR as part of a spourt-tourer conversion. I went with APEX adjustable bars (similar to those pictured above). They are outstanding. Almost infinitely adjustable, which is what I don't like about the Helibars. If the angles of the Heli's aren't right for you, you're stuck. The APEX bars look great and are well finished. A high quality product. Depending on the kit, you can get up to a 4" rise! With these bars, lower pegs, better seat, and ST windscreen, the CBR is more comfortable than any BMW that I've had (R and K bikes). I'm sure the same results can be had with the S1KRR. If I didn't have the CBR to travel on, I'd do these mods to the S1KRR.

+1 for Grip Puppies. Found it was the hands and not the wrists that were sore. The stock grips felt like pieces of pipe. Once this was relieved, the wrists also seemed to feel better, making me think it was just the hands in the first place. Have done some 5-6 hour runs since without major issue.

FYI - Came from 22 years worth or VFR's.

A very inexpensive first try without going $$$ for Helibars or something similar.

Good luck.

I found Driven Superbike grips a welcome relief from the stock grips on my K1300S and S1000RR.

I second (or is it fourth?) the stomach crunch. It's basically more of a better riding position where you concentrate in putting your weight more on your butt than on your wrists. Sit on the bike like you are squatting, adjust your feet on the pegs accordingly.

You will find that eventually your thighs and legs (also possibly stomach) would get sore long before your wrists. Then you know you have nailed the sitting/riding position. :)

Another position worth trying... I've folded up a t-shirt and place it by my stomach to lean on the tank. The added thickness and cushion help and it creates a better angle and support.
