Man caves-The Motorcyclist cafe Barn and Bunkhouse

Postby Deans BMW on Tue Jan 25, 2011 9:15 pm

Went out today and shot a selection of my ultimate Man cave, the MC B&B as it is called. Built the entire thing all by myself, started the 4th of July 1996. It is still a work in progress though it is over 95% finished, some say that it will never be finished as we constantly have new ideas to incorporate.

A little background, we live out in the North eastern Arizona Mountains at an elevation of 6,300 ft in the middle of a large plot of land :D . We are miles from any utilities like Power, Water, sewer, etc. Our place is totally solar powered to include our well.

This is the spot that my wife and I selected about 500' from our house on our place back in '96.

Image

Here it is today two stories over 3,000 sq ft. The down stairs is post and beam construction while the upstair is a conventionally framed 10 bed guest house.

Image

The question is, Would you like a pictorial tour and would that be appropriate in this section or this forum for that matter.

Dean,

You might consider posting a pic inside the garage/shop with all of your bikes... (And, perhaps point out the spot reserved for the soon-to-arrive red K16!)

It's been quite an experience to watch you build the MC B&B piece by piece...from your first thoughts, to reality.

i would be keen to see the progress from beginning to end... i'm sure if you included a few garage shots, it could nestle nicely into this category... :D

Wow.

That seems to be more of a man-mansion though... !!

Looks great! You'd better not park a KTM in there with that big BMW logo/shield though - the KTM may explode on sight. No wait, they do that anyway...

We have had all kinds of bikes come and visit. My driveway is 3 miles long of.......unmaintained dirt and gravel road

The entire project has been built with out any plans, each day I would just do some part. I found that if I tried to envision or think about it an anxiety attack would ensue. We initially just wanted a barn or something similar to do stuff in and a place to work on the motorcycles. Initially all we knew is that the slab was going to be 30' wide and 50' deep as we had a neighbor several miles away that had a 30x40 and it didn't seem big enough.

This is the entire build thread, now 238 pages long,

http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/ ... e-and-Barn

The upstair guest house.

When we started, an upstair was never even thought of, the building evolved on a day to day basis into what it is today.

Looking into the front all purpose room from the door at the top of the stairs, the kitchen area is on the right side towards the back.

Image

Looking across from the other front corner, the small bedroom is on the left in the center is the hall way to the back large 6 bed bedroom, bathroom on the hall left and a 6x9 closet on hall right.

Image

Looking to the front of the all purpose room you see the pellet stove for heat, it gets cold here in the winter. The large windows give a great breeze in the summer.

Image

This is looking into the front small bedroom with twin antique beds and antique furniture. This is perfect for a couple as it has 5 windows with a great view and breeze. All of the trim around the windows and doors along with the baseboard I made with my table saw and router out of notty pine from the local Indian reservation's saw mill.

Image

The small bedroom showing the 5 windows.

Image

This is the large back bedroom with 6 beds, the hallwat to the front room and just to the right of the door is another sink.

Image

From the hallway to the large back bedroom showing the double doors that lead to a large deck out back.

Image

The 18'x16' back deck that is 10' off the ground.

Image

On the back deck looking south east. There are no visibal neighbors with the closest being 1 1/2 mile away. Perfect silence and you can see every star at night as the air is pristine clear.

Image

The upstair bathroom.

Image

We have our own well of the best tasting water I have ever tasted. Some time when working hard on a project you don't quiet realize just what you have built, sometime when I walk out to the barn from the house, I just stop and ask, How in the world did that happen?

Let me know and I will post more. The MC B&B is for the use of my friends that I have ment around the world that I have ment I have ment since my involvement with the BMW community in 1972.

Awesome, just awesome!

This is why I wanted the garage section of the forum. You have really built a work of art there. I am truly envious. Again, very, very nice work.

Errr. Only slightly jealous. Honest! And you call that a barn  It's bigger, lets say, waaaaay bigger, and much better equipped than my house in Tokyo. Oh and my neighbour is about 15cm's not 1 1/2 miles away!!!! And you can forget stars at night here with the acres of neon glaring out constantly. Do you want to do a home exchange for a month....

All i can say is WOW - Here in the UK, a single car garage is the 'norm' and I feel lucky to have a 1.5x wide garage for my bikes - but that 'barn' is amazing.
