Santander Spain to Calais France

Postby jimglasgow on Mon Aug 20, 2012 2:53 pm

Hi Folks,

Looking on going my first European trip next year with my bike and a good friend. Was looking to travel up through France to Calais to catch the ferry back to UK. Was wondering if anyone could give suggestions for good routes avoiding toll roads and motorways if possible. looking to cover about 250 Miles a day with some days without travel (rest days).

Thanks

How many days you are travelling? I suggest you to head towards Pamplona and go zigzag Pyrenees to Andorra maybe. Great Alpine Road, Black Forest, Luxembourg, Calais. West France is not so interesting to drive. Pick from maps green areas on route.

I would (and have done several time) do it the other way,by the time you arrive in Santander a nice cruise and rest on the ferry will be very welcome, assuming you have a good crossing, because you'll be crying for your mom if you have a bad one :D

I'd be looking along the lines of Calais.

Amiens
Beauvais
Charte
Blois
Charteroux
Guert
Aurrillac
Rodez
Castre

Then over the Pyrenees and make you way to Santander, just make sure you allow plenty of time to explore the Picos.

I see on other posts your of limited experience,we've all been there, but don't let the 'We don't do motorways' mob put you off, they have their uses for covering ground when your tired,it's OK doing all the small roads, the first time you forget which side of the road your on and your in trouble,I'm not saying don't do it,just cut the odds down a little.

I'd still take the chance with boat,France ain't the place it was,the speeding thing!!!,you'll need to pay attention and make sure you have a heavy duty credit card just in case, the Picos is a wonderfull place, head for the likes of Potes and spend as much time as you can before making a dash for the ferry.
