Best Roads Germany & Austria

Postby r1 Convert on Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:07 am

Morning Chaps

I think we have decided to skip Spain as originally planned (due to cash / time restraints) and have decided to head back to Germany and Austria for 2012.

So as i am aware of the area something similar to the North Pole, im looking for some excellent advice on the best roads. We did a route through the Black Forest last year that we enjoyed loads so we figure that in addition to the autobahns and that the people are nice, we thought we would give it a bash.

If there are some good routes that verge these area's id also be interested in that as well.

Cheers

Jon

Hi Jon,

How many days? And is it a riding trip (higher miles and technical roads) or a holiday trip (wife along, lots of photo's and cafes), or something in between?

Depending on the answer, something like the below could suit you - some of the best roads in that neck of the woods. I was figuring 6 days for this trip. 7 days would be nicer for photo's and relaxing.

A lot of Germany is really, really dull riding. Austria is better, but a fair old hike to get there, and better riding down in Switzerland/Italy, plus the cops in Austria don't show much of a sense of humour... The above route uses Germany for the National Forest (which you've done and is excellent - just more and more cops there so watch it!) and other than that just utilises their motorways to make up distance, plus takes in the Nurburgring which is a must (just check it is open for visitors the day you plan to pass through!!). The Luxembourg region - Vianden and the forests is wonderful, we go there most years.

I have loads of options, and can share the waypoint files with you.

Just FYI - could not find the days off for the whole team this year, and so we've ended up deciding on a shorter route over 5 days and less miles, something like below.

An example of a nice 6 day trip - day 1 is all the motorway down through France to stay night 1 very near Lausanne. This was a great trip - the Swiss passes were incredible, especially the one through the middle of an Army training ground! Between 13 and 14 is linked - just only open a few months each year, so Sat Nav does not route it.

Cheers Rick

Its just a lads ride, def more technical than sightseeing but maybe not as hardcore as you :D Trying to avoid the mistakes of last year and dont want to do every country in Europe in 9 days

Map 2 12-30 was the area we went through last time and we really enjoyed it, so around that area. if you know any decent routes further afield we would be up for those also !

You coming out to play in June ?
Cheers

Now here's an idea for the forum - a trip route-file area where you can post files, as long as they contain sensible meta-data (which I could help with the standards...).

Any format you want Jon? I'll email them to you.
