BMW K1300S HP first ride
By Phil West - First rides & tests - 29 March 2012 15:28

With the new K1300S HP (for High Performance), BMW has taken one of its established, but aging standards, and sought to both extend its shelf-life and broaden its appeal by producing a limited edition, 'blinged-up' incarnation.

The recipe is simple: tweak the cosmetics with a sprinkling of carbon fibre, tinted screen and model-specific paint job; add some substance by way of BMW's on-the-move suspension adjustment system, on-board computer, quick-shifter and more. And, finally, round it all off with a limited edition numbered plaque at the front of the tank.

As a bread and butter bike the K1300S has long been an impresively slick, stable and supersonic fast motorway devourer. Point me at Dusseldorf and I'll see you there by lunch, unruffled, unflustered, under the clock tower.

The 175bhp, four-cylinder, shaftie bulges with sheer urge; its fat midrange so twist 'n' go instant the upper reaches of the rev range need never be explored, and cruising just the wrong side of the legal limit is about as relaxing as two wheels get.

The semi-sports riding position is sublimely comfortable and yet with enough purposefulness and aggression to imbibe its pilot with the cool arrogance expected of a Teutonic powerhouse-owner.

Its stability and steadfastness is awesome (at the slight cost, ineveitably, of flickability negotiating traffic or through tight bends).

The downside to all that, though, is that the K1300S is also now over three years old and, frankly, is starting to show it - something compounded by the arrival of Kawasaki's updated and electronics-laden ZZR1400 this year.

It's strange...I've read and watched a LOT of reviews on this bike, and most of them are less than flattering. I've never talked to someone that owned one, though, that didn't love it. I don't get it at all. Three years old, and it's ready to be put out to pasture? Really? I can't wait to get mine in April (although I'm not getting the HP version)!

Interestingly as I was refueling my previous bike a Z1000, a gent arrived on a white K13s
I walked over to him as he was about to fuel up, whats it like, his words were

'I'd buy another one' what better advertisement could you get
he wears out his current K and goes and buys the next K bike...
Son of GUN

Forget the Zx14 its NOT in the league of the BMW at all, ever... :D
Thanks

I guess the magazine guys have to earn their money. Amazing how in a short time a bike goes from being the best to being considered past its prime in the eyes of the magazines. As for the real world it all comes down to personal preference and no magazine article should change that. I recently test rode a 2012 Hayabusa. Thought it was a fantastic bike. According to magazines the suspension is terrible and the brakes are wooden. I thought the bike felt great. This Saturday I test ride the 2012 ZX-14R. For me I wanted the K no matter what. My HP is the kind of bike I can sit in the garage on a chair and stare at all day. The K can already go from 0 to arrest me in less time than it takes to read this sentence. The fact that the zx can accelerate 1/2 second quicker in the 1/4 mile vs the k means nothing in the real world or that it can do 186 vs 175 or so. Amazing how many of these so called number one magazine bikes are up for sale with almost no mileage on them. Not saying they are not great bikes but sometimes people buy them for the wrong reasons. A magazine would consider a K1200s to be outdated but in reality it is still a better built more technologically advanced motorcycle than 90% of the bikes made today.

Nice post but what are the reasons for buying a bike ? Unless you commute on them, they are toys. If you commute, anything over 600cc is overkill.

For me, my bikes are toys. I dont use them to commute. In addition to my K13S HP, i also ride a 2011 suzuki burgman 400. Now you want to talk commuting, that is the ultimate. Nimble, tons of storage, all day comfort, great on gas, and very relaxing. Nobody really needs a 1300cc 175hp bike, at least in the united states but i am dam glad i have the option of buying one. Some days i just dont feel like riding the beast, its on those days that the burgman really shines. Anyone who knocks the maxi scooters should really ride one. Makes a great compliment in the garage with the K1300S.

We all ride for various reasons. For me, it's performance. Not outright HP but blend of speed and handling.
