Wearing Medical Eye Glasses Under Your Helmet?

Postby TamerS1000RR on Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:54 am

Mates,

Those of us who wear eye glasses under their helmets know that this no fun!!! i thought of opening this thread may be there are any new inventions out there that makes our lives easy!!!

I tried contact lenses, but my Astigmatism makes it impossible to find accurate ones that can fully correct my vision, so i have to put the lenses before i ride, then once at office i have to take them off or else i feel so distressed while working on my computer!!!

Any one is aware of any new Gizmo that helps us with this?

So.. what is the issue exactly? I have been wearing prescription glasses since age 12 and riding motorcycles with glasses ever since I started riding 22 years ago. I never ever had a problem wearing my glasses in a helmet. The only thing is, you have to pay attention when buying a helmet, you actually buy one that has enough space around the legs of your glasses to fit comfortably. Having glasses with straight legs, instead of hooks behind your ears also helps, making it easier to put them in and out without bending. I currently wear the RayBan 8401 and they are a delight to wear, very light weight and zero effort to put in a helmet. I also use a Shoei Multitec Shearwater TC2 flip helmet, which allows me to put my helmet on/off without even taking my glasses off. Flips are the best thing since sliced bread for someone wearing glasses. Though this being the S1000 forums, I can understand if you want to stick to full face.

yeah ... there really isn't a "big" problem with wearing glasses ... the only "problem" that i've got, since i moved back into the sportbike class, is to get a clear view when you are pinned on the tank behind the screen at highspeed ... will have to buy "higher" glasses, next time :?

Have you considered Lasik? I wear glasses and the problem is that there is another piece of glass/plastic between you and the road. With meticulous cleaning it's not that big of a deal until the weather cools and turns a bit foul. Then fogging can be a big issue as can keeping them clear of rain. I have not found a great solution for the problem other than surgery or contacts.

I have one pair of progressive lenses for general driving/riding (mostly upright) and another optimized for the computer monitor. It was quite expensive but the optometrist recommended some progressive lenses that offer a larger slice for teh computer than before. Traditionally progressive lenses can only give you a small for reading a book or a computer. If you are crouched over the tank and looking up while riding, I would recommend working with your optometrist to set up the lenses with the larger slice for riding on top (may be a bifocal) and a second pair for the computer kept with the laptop/PC.

I found I don't like wearing progressive lenses so have ended up with a collection of glasses for specific purposes. One for reading and computing with a single lens, one for medium range with bifocal lower for reading and larger upper lens for 1 to 3 Metre range (originally I used these for classroom teaching when I was a motorcycle instructor) , one for everyday use with 1 to 3 M lower bifocal and long distance large upper lens.
Finally I have a motorcycle specific pair. They are rimless and with the same specs as my everyday glasses. The lenses are larger than normal and give me minimal sight restrictions. The lower bifocal is big enough to enable me to read the gauges leaving the large upper for looking where I'm going. They work fine on the racetrack too. I got the optometrist to cut the metal arms shorter so they just bend over the top of my ears. This enables me to wear most helmets without problems.

Thanks all of you for sharing ur views, my main issue is when I try to twist my head to the side to make sure of the upcoming stream before entering the road from a side way, this is when the glasses get pushed by the helmet.

I will check few of the options u all mentioned above, eg straight bars, larger glass for a bigger field of vision.

Laser is certainly on my list, it is just that I am a surgeon and I hate to let a scalpel mess with me
