DSLR cameras - great toys

Hi Guys:
A couple of weeks ago I bought a Nikon D7000 DSLR camera launched in September 2010.

I think could be interesting start a dialogue about these perfect machines.

Highlight:
- 16 Megapixels
- 1/8000 speed, courtain tested 150.000 shots
- Two memories can be used as backup, 1st for Raw and 2nd for JPEG, or programmed combinations
- Full HD video up to 1080p / 24 fps
- ISO up to 25600
- Full time Auto focus in live view
- Up to 6 fps continuous shooting
- Can be used with older Nikkor lenses, registering up to 9 lens non CPU nikkor

My first samples are in Jpeg (saved in the second memory as backup), the primary pics are in RAW ( 20 Mb) saved in the first memory . Sadly must to compress because are too large for postimage.

Very nice toy Bernardo I had one of the nikon compact cameras and it was excellent, unfortunately I got it wet and it stoped working I sent it back to nikon and 2 weeks later it was returned to me alive again free of charge ( under warranty).
Unfortunately I got it wet again at NW 200 and bust it.
So I now have a panasonic TZ 10 with a waterproof case and I find it great while out and about and on the bike.

when I can justify a full on DSLR like yours I am going to go for the Pentax K5 because it is waterproof and as tough as old boots.

Bernardo, That's the new hot DSLR, the Nikon D7000. Congrats. Personally I like the Panasonic GH1 and now the new GH2. The reason, they have the best HD video. Bar none.

Let me explain, with the Panasonic GH series, you can auto focus and continuous auto focus very quickly while shooting HD video. At this time only Sony offers the same option. The Nikon D7000 also offers this option now, but it's not practical, because the auto focusing in video is very very slow.

So, if you are shooting HD with Canon, Nikon, or any other DSLR, although the quality is great, you'd need to focus manually. Which can be a pain. With the Panasonic GH series, you can shoot like a pro, basically use the camera as a high end camcorder.

So, that's my reasoning for sticking to the GH line, until the next great thing comes along. But the D7000 is the current hot camera to have. So you have taste...

I am going to go for the Pentax K5

Excellent comments about K5, specially by Dpreview, asigning the best score for it
IMO the reality all the semipro cameras are only weather proof.. except high end cameras with high end prices

but it's not practical, because the auto focusing in video is very very slow.

Yes, also I've experimented this issue, specially with low light, in certain conditions, Now the firmware has changed and improved. With normal/high bright no problem. Also the firmware corrects some hot pixels that appear also on low light conditions, on the other hand the quality of videos are incredibly clean and vivid

So, that's my reasoning for sticking to the GH line

Excellent choice, the forum has many examples of the quality of Panasonic in latest models, one of the reasons for my choice is that I have several Nikon lenses especially the 70-300 zoom ( equivalent to 450mm in 35mm, in DX format)
the size of Panasonic is an additional advantage

the first ones in the landscape are shoot with the 5D MKII though, but you don't´t need expensive stuff to make some nice photographs . All frames in cityscape from Rome are shoot with the 30D and the EF-S 10-22 mm. and all portraits in misc. with the 30D and the EF 24-105 mm. f/4.0L

Great lenses (i.e. Canons L-series with the red ring) is a investment, camera house is an expense... so first put your pocket money on lenses, upgrade camera house after wards...

I'm a Canon man myself, I can't get along with Nikon colors. Though the latest models are getting pretty close to what I like and seem to abandon the typical cool/blueish photo's Nikons used to have. The one thing I do love about Nikon is their flash system. The Canon flash system is a lot harder to get along with and takes much more practise.

Anyway, my kit consists of:

- Canon EOS 5D (original)
- Canon EF24-105/f4 L
- Canon EF17-40/f4 L
- Canon EF 70-200/f2.8 L
- Canon Speedlite 580EX-II

Once you go L there is no going back...

I went for the Pentax K5 when it first came out - had the K10 for a few years so knew what I was getting.

It's like a pro camera in terms of the water and dust seals - which was a key factor in my choice. Plus cheap lenses (any old Pentax lens fits!), and is small and light - good for mountaineering trips.

Funny enough I was about to start a thread in a few weeks when I perfect my "SLR motorbike carrying harness".... Just need a couple of parts to arrive....


Bernardo - what a great camera. Fantastic functions and already some brilliant shots out of it. Enjoy! Just don't do what I do and make sure you take enough photo's! I wish I'd take about 10 times the photo's I do on bike trips, but just never do...? I get too much into the riding and forget? Or something.

Thanks Rick, hope I will take pics to post here, of my trips. I know, is a big camera to carry in La Gorda but I prefer to sacrificate some stuff and enjoy viewing fantastic places I have visited

I think that your Nikon is about the same size as my Pentax - which is perfect for portability. I find lenses to be the problem, as I like using primes, but that can mean lots of lens swaps, and you have to carry them all around with you!! Trying to rationalise....
I like the SD card you bought - I need one of these, as I am still using 4 and 8 GB ones, which are not the best with these large file sizes!

About memories,never enough, today you can buy 32 Gb SDHC like this, also my camera accept new memories SDXHC up 2 terabytes as diamonds, a little fortune in few weight...

Yeah, that is one heck of a lens. Heavy, yes, but absolutely worth it considering the IQ it produces.

I am actually kinda considering the K5 as a second camera. I want to have something smaller than the 5D + grip to throw into my sargent storage pod when I am riding, but I don't want to get a compact and compromise the quality I am used to that much. And I really like the weather sealing of the K5 - you can just about dump it into the water, and it will keep going. It's a rather expensive camera to be used as a toss around 2nd camera though.

How about the K7 instead? Pretty similar in the great scheme of things, especially if it is for a backup camera?

I highly rate the K7. The Pentax has been properly abused, even to the extent I dumped a 2 litre bottle of water with it's lid off on top of it in my pack - just wiped it off and it was fine. Lucky I had a weather sealed lens on at the time, as that is the usual weakness as most old Pentax lenses don't have the required sealing. It seems, so far, to handle vibration ok too - I think the small size and small weight helps here.

In giving that recommendation it is still true I'm a little jealous over camera's like Bernardo's new toy that have far better auto focus speed, and I think a better dynamic range...?

AF speed is overrated for most applications. But if you need it, go Canon, its AF system/lens combo is the fastest of all brands.

According to the reviews I have read, the DR is very good on the K5, so I wouldn't stare yourself blind on other brands/camera's that quickly.

No - I'm not quick out of the blocks, in fact just very slow and somewhat of a fool.... I have the K7... I got confused over model names and thought surely the K5 is earlier.... I guess they are leading up to the K1...

What bike do I ride again?... K100 or somewhat?

I'm now going to busy myself and earn my redemption through making a top-tips SLR tank bag.... in a few weeks....
