Near hit last night

Postby mattb on Sat Jan 22, 2011 10:17 am

Fridays I ride my bike to work. When I got back I decided I'd go and get gas as I always like to start out with a full tank. I had to make a left turn to get to gas station (which is across the on coming traffic in USA) This road is usually fairly quiet but last night the on coming traffic was never ending and although with a check in my mirrors I couldn't see anything approaching me I felt a bit uneasy just sitting there. It was about 5pm and so the setting sun was right in our faces making visibility a bit difficult. The on coming traffic wasn't stopping and no way to shoot between cars. I could now see some approaching cars behind me so I moved bike further into center of road - closer to on coming traffic on a 6th sense feeling. I always ride with full beam on but that wasn't helping much from behind. Checked mirror again and the traffic was at a distance were I thought they should really be slowing down now so I moved bike pretty much onto white line and remembering the video I'd watched from another posting in the Crash forum I put my brake light on and moved the bike from side to side as much as I could to break up my outline. At this point reflecting on what happened I probably should have just gunned it and shot down the road turned around and come back for gas but I didn't. Anyway the car saw me way to late (Honda CRV) and swerved off the road with its nearside wheels and missed me. If I hadn't had that 6th sense thing and moved closer to center I'd either have been rear ended at about 40mph or the car would have swerved and rolled big time as there's a ditch immediately off the road. Upshot is I'm all safe and sound and want to thank all the posters on this forum as what I read just this week could have contributed to me staying safe last night. Thanks all and stay aware to stay safe.

Ouch. Sounds just nasty.

Glad you are ok, and no damage to the bike too, but a bit of a worry.

I hate staying in traffic, better to be a nutter and always ahead of it.

Some real cage driving dicks around eh.. :(

When stationary, I always try to be in-between cars, never in the front of behind. If I have to be in the front, and this may be open to debate, I try to stay close to the line, in case car behind me does not register I am not there. I also flicker brake light, this is a habit now. I feel than when stationary, I am most vulnerable.
