Going down the road.....

Postby icedfusion on Fri May 13, 2011 6:52 pm

so, i was traveling back from work and as I was overtaking a car on my side then a BMW car overtook another car on his side. I can only think he didn't see me or the car I was overtaking.......The car I was overtaking braked hard - which I also had to do - I could not carry on along the middle of the road else I would have been hit head on, so i turned into the car i was just about to overtake - the move towards the car I was overtaking caused me to loose the front and down I went like a sack of sh!t......rolling, rolling and thinking 'please, do not let another car hit me' - I was lucky, the right side of my body took the weight of the bike as it hit the floor and i am very bruised - but no broken bones and everyone managed to stop and watch me roll/skid down the road.

I had full leathers on and a rucksack - the rucksack was completely worn through and I have no doubt the whole setup saved me from certain road-rash.

So, was this my fault - I would have to put my hand up and say 'partially', yes. Was I on my BMW - no - I was on my comuter bike, a triumph sprint RS.

Now the thing here is that I am very confident that the BMW would have braked in time whereas the Triumph always felt a bit 'squirmy' under heavy braking and I thought that the front would tuck one day.....and so it did!

Am I relived, yes! Will I continue riding to work, yes, just as soon as the swelling goes down!

Here's to being alive!

P.S. Got my bike back this evening, so will take some pics tomorrow and show the damage to it.

Bloody hell mate, not nice. If you had already begun the overtaking manoeuvre, then its not youre fault.

Did you get the plate of the BMW ? I think if the insurance companies decided to chase it, he would be liable.

I don’t know this for a fact but i do have lot of experience in insurance claims (running the most unlucky fleet of vans on the planet), I think it would be considered that for the time that you were overtaking you were established in the lane, by the BMW then doing another overtaking manoeuvre, he wouldn’t have the right of way.

These Grey area's in insurance are not normally as grey as people think, after all, the insurance companies have seen every type of accident.

The truth is that it probably wouldn’t have happened on you’re Beemer but the important thing is that you live to fight another day. As B said, you can replace a bike !!!!

Glad youre ok mate.
Cheers

Good to learn your´e okay and the bruises will fade very soon.

I´m riding the K13S to work everyday, a out/home trip just over 100 km. No serious mishaps have occurred so far :D
I think we all have had some near accident riding the bike, I for sure have saved my ass on several occasions  But on the bike I´m 100 % focused on the road conditions and traffic, trying to anticipate the flow and movement of cars, trucks and buses. When driving the car I´m much more relaxed and naturally I feel more safe behind steel and several airbags.

But I´ts not possible to anticipate everything what will happen on the roads, but we need to be as focused as we can - for our own safety.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

So here are a few photo's of my bike now it is back in my garage:

Front is completely gone - lights/plastics and steel mounting surround all wrecked
Image

Footpeg snapped off and brake pedal bent on itself - only a bruise on my ankle (nice new boots probably saved me here).
Image

Fairing worn as it traveled down the road

Will take some more when I get round to removing all the damage parts. As you can probably see in the background, I have a few other bikes which I can still use!
