Just got home from a cold wet ride from work, here in Perth, Western Australia. Unlike Eastern Australia where there have been massive floods, here there has been quite a bad drought. Today is the first day that it has really rained hard for over 6 months.
I decided to change my route home from 95% freeway - essentially filtering for 20 km home in conditions like today, to a longer but more scenic route along the coast.
On the way towards Fremantle there is a long hill with a set of 2 traffic lights near the top. The first set is associated with shops and allows pedestrians to cross. The second set is probably less than 150 meters further up the hill at its apex.
The rain was pretty heavy and the light was dying fast. The first set of lights went red as I approached in the right hand lane of the 2 lane road. I pulled into the vacant left hand lane but as is my want quite close to the centre line.
About 20 seconds after I had stopped there was a loud engine sound and suddenly a ute (the americans would call it a truck) came screaming past my left side, clipping my left mirror knocking it forward and then continuing its swerve partially off the road, collecting a high pedestrian barrier mesh fence as it went. I was just left open mouthed as it stopped and then continued around the next corner. The lights changed and as it was still raining like a bastard and I didnt trust myself how I would react to the guy, I just kept going on my way.
The left mirror is partially cracked - that is it!
