Tires Pressure, how much for road riding?

Postby TamerS1000RR on Thu Dec 23, 2010 3:09 pm

Mates, during the past CSS inhad to change my tires pressure to 32 front and 30 back, immediately I felt much more able to lean more since my bike came from the dealer with 38 front and 40 rear tires pressure!!!

I kept the same pressure settings after CSS, today I had the bike serviced for the first 1000Km and again they restored the pressure to 38 and 40!!! And again I am too tense in corners on my drive back home!!!

I live in tropical climate, temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees, those who are more experienced than me, what do you do on ur own bikes?

Hi Tamer :)

You can use the low pressure if you feel good with it, inside the allowed values without activate the low pressure alarm (just annoying)

If you ride alone, or you are light weight, it's ok..., also values of 23 or 24 psi (with red alarm on)

Normally pressures are indicated to obtain a correct wear in whole life of tyre, means if you run with low pressure probably the tire will wear more on the sides than center, if you inflate too much is the inverse process..

Tamer, 32F 36R should be a good starting point. I would not go much lower, and your 30R is a track pressure not a street pressure.

Going to 23 or 24 is completely ridiculous (sorry Bernardo), even on the track, for 99 out of 100 people. On the street, it is outright dangerous.

That's ok, it's my fault, not correctly expressed :)

low pressures aren't to ride on street, just I noted what could be the lower limit of the tyre, in this case on track use

Actually - it's the other way round - flat tyre won't turn at all and you won't be able to lean more or faster.
You drop pressure on the track as tyres work very hard and they heat up, build up pressure and feel normal after lap or two - or you can use tyre warmers.
On the street, unless you are really carving it in the mountains, tyres don't build up that much heat (pressure) hence you need higher pressure to start with. Furthermore, you have potholes and you may carry pillion or luggage - all of which dictates higher pressure.

I am not going to convert your values but you may convert mine - 2.5bar rear and 2.3bar front is good for most solo riding.

Thanks Alex, so it is 33 F and 36 R after conversion, the explanation helped a lot, I used to think that stoping pressure increases the contact patch with Tarmac, but now I know the real reason behind it.

P.S I almost lose hope every time I see ur avatar, that is a really cool one, that tells it all :))

Just to have more information about this thread, found an interesting dialog about pressures and riding styles....

I've never had a bike without TPM, am getting a S1000RR in few days time. How do you live without seeing your tyre pressures? Do you check your pressures before every ride? Aren't you scared of a puncture and only realising it too late.

I would love the S1krr to have TPM. probably all in my head but tires, pressures and rubber generally are an important part (only part) keep one on the road.

i agreed with John, consistantly checking is a mindset, although having TPM on K13S was really nice as well...

i'm running 34F 36R, works great, you immediately felt the traction from 36F 42R, and i am going to try 30F and 30R for the track and see how it goes

cheers!

If you are serious about your tyre pressures - on the track pressure is measured when tyres are hot and you don't guess, Michelin for instance has detailed information for each and every tyre, type of surface, race compound and track temperature. I am somewhat suspicious about your increased traction - only reason you drop tyre pressure (specially on the track) is to compensate for increased air expansion due to high flex/friction.

I have to say that you must be extra careful on the street with lower pressures. You will not have the rim protection that higher pressure gives so look out for objects, potholes and curbs (kerbs).
