KR Sliders

Postby Ignore Amos on Thu Feb 09, 2006 3:33 am

Well I received my sliders today from San Jose BMW and the kit includes 5 sliders, 2 for the forks, 2 for the frame and 1 for the rear swing arm- took about 5 minutes to install and they are as follows on the bike:

Frame and fork right side

Frame and fork left side

Swing arm

The frame sliders just screw into the factory location and extend and about a half inch beyond the factory units. The fork sliders are inserted into the hub openings and use a expandable nut that once tightend holds them in place. the Swing arm slider works the same way- over all quality, fit and finish seem pretty good and for $200 seems much better than what the factory provided, which isn't much. It just seems like cheap insurance and if you saw how I ride you'd understand.

Uhhhh!!!

I started putting these one, and have gotten myself into a mess.

I put the left slider on:
1. Unscrewed the torx bolt, put away old slider, kept torx bolt
2. Put the base of the new slider on, inserted the torx bolt and tightened.
3. Screwed on the top of the slider (the whole cap is threaded and hand tightens down on the base of the slider).

I went around to do the right slider, and my torx bit was gone . . . oops, it came off and was in the torx bolt in the left slider.

So I grab the left slider and start twisting counter-clockwise to remove the cap . . .

but the whole slider assembly turns and loosens the torx bolt.

So now I have a semi-loose slider on the left side that I cannot get the top off of to:
- retreive my torx bit
or
- retighten the torx bolt inside.

I've been trying to keep loosening the torx bolt inside by spinning the slider, but it's barely moved after a couple of hours, and now the slider rattles terribly when the bike is on.

Tightening is not working ethier.

I can't grip the base of the slider without risking damage to the engine.

I might have to drill out the top of the slider to reach the torx bolt . . .

WHAT A DRAG!

I solved my issue . . .

Drilled out the top of the slider to access the torx bolt. Tightened it up, and went riding.

I now have the kit in hand myself, but no instructions are included or accesible on the web site that I can find. Thanks to the pics above and trial-and-error above hopefully things will go smoothly and in the right place!

How-to:

1-One of the frame sliders has a longer plastic extension where it inserts into the frame. This one goes on the left side. I didn't realize this until I went to the right side and the slider wouldn't fit to the proper depth. Thanks to a prior post, I had torqued down on the left side bolt well enough that I could unscrew the cap by hand and remove the underlying bolt.

2-the right side frame slider has the smaller projection as the recess isn't as deep. Installation is the same.

3-The placement of the front axle sliders is obvious, one side is a larger diameter than the other.

4-The existing soft plastic cap must be gently pried off of the swingarm. The new slider fits nicely but doesn't seem to seat fully, leaving a 2-3mm gap between its outer diameter and the swingarm. It didn't seat with a few taps of a rubber mallet, so I tightened it in place and it looks the same as the pics above.

Well, today I got to put the sliders to use; I lowsided in a slow turn due to a giant splattered trail of green/yellow goup on the road and too much throttle out of the turn.

The back broke loose and took the whole bike down onto its side where it skidded for about fifteen feet.

I had these sliders and my hard bags on, and all I have to replace is the sliders, one bolt on an engine cap, the bag cover, the shift foot lever and the switch (attached to the kickstand) which broke off.

I did get a little chafing on the bottom of the swing arm, but you would never notice it unless you got down low and looked.

The handlebars didn't touch, the mirror barely touched, the covers for the gas tank, engine, radiator, sides all survived unschathed.

I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS $200 PART HIGHLY ENOUGH!

And the fact that BMW had the brains to setup the $700 hard bags with protectors that can be replaced for $40 is genius.

Sorry to hear about the drop. You didn't mention how you came out of it yourself, but it's good to know that you are well enough to post. I'm glad I put the sliders on, but I hope they don't pay for themselves.

No need to worry; it was a low speed drop at around 15 MPH, so only the mesh jacket got a little dirty. That's how I knew the color of the liquid on the road; the left arm of my jacket was soaked in it . . .

Sounds kinda like antifreeze. It has a notably sweet taste and flouresces strongly under a blacklight. I dare you to taste the unknown liquid

Invisible antifreeze and oil are constant fears of mine. I encountered a spot of something years ago that banged my helmet on the pavement before I knew what had happened. No sliders on my bike (this was in 1988) and about $400 in repairs. I had been going casually through a turn at an intersection. What really pissed me off was that a car driver watched my bike slide to a stop right next to his car, then his light turned green. He just drove away, left me laying there. I limped to the bike with a bleeding elbow and shut it off.

Good point, because unfortunately semen is also flourescent, and everyone's urine is to varying degrees. I know this, because of occasional people who drink toxic antifreeze in an attempt to kill themselves and we try to flouresce their urine trying to diagnose the illness.

So to the original point, he must therefore taste the fluid to diagnose the source of his accident. And I probably just bought us a topic move to Charand Parand! :?

Will these fit the "S", I need these...

Postby motoringM on Sat Jul 15, 2006 9:27 am

...same as others have said, I am a careful manipulater of my bike, but sometimes, things like oil and coolant are invisible...and you just can't avoid a spill...pun intended. I dropped my back earlier this year, new panel $750USD...so, one spill and the sliders will have paid for themselves twice!

New to the site, thanks for the info on the sliders, big thanks.

Looking to put them on ASAP, have a question for "Ignore Amos".

when looking at the pics of yuor bike and the sliders, (thanks by the way),
I noticed that you have a belly pan on your K12R that seems to fit with the stock lower front end? if so where did you get it, if not it still looks great and where did you get it? I am looking for one for my 06 yellow and black K12R. Been looking but few options and you seem to have a cleaner look that what i have seen offered so far. Any help would be great :)
Thanks,

Thanks for the compliment surfdude...I'm orginally from Santa Barbara, still get to San Diego every now and then and try to live up to your screen name....anyway- I have the AC Schnizter bellypan and headlight cover on my bike- it does use the factory upper panels which I painted to match the bellypan (Krylon Plasitc cote)

When I orderd mine the local dealer ordered one too and he put it on a yellow black and had it painted and it came out like this...

Thanks for the quick info, and the pics. Now I am really jealious :) ,

I see that you are using bar end mirrors, I tried to add them to mine, since i use them on my other bikes, but was told that I would have to somehow "shave" the ends of the bar caps.

I have heated grips but I do not really see the diff in bar end size, how did you get yours on or who did you use. I went through a local cataloge for mine, also noticed the hand grip covers, very nice touch, are they from a GS model or are they also spec order?

The head light cover is sharp on the black bike, I promise I will not copy that :D

Thanks for the pic of the yellow bike, as soon as I get everything 10-8 and figure out these damn computers I will post a pic of the finished project
Thanks,

To start, the handguards are from a KTM 950 (I have one of those) they're cheap (like $40) for a set and bolt right on the end of the KR bars- no mods necessary- I then put on the aluminum bar end mirrors from Cycle gear (I think they On sale for $40 the set too) and they bolt right as I was now useing the KTM bar end insert from the 950 handguards. Get some pics of your mods as you get them together.

Slider Install Question

Postby bikelee on Sun Nov 19, 2006 11:57 am

On the right side of the bike where you install the slider there is an engine bolt that has to come out. It looks like there is a pinch bolt that puts pressure on the engine mounting bolt. Does that mean that the pinch bolt must be loosened to remove the engine mounting bolt ? This would not be a big deal but the pinch bolt is blocked by the coolant bleed valve. Am I worrying about nothing and just remove the engine mounting bolt ? :?: Lee

Installing the right side R & G slider was a problem for me too as I didn't RTF instructions! I initially thought I was missing a piece (a sleeve, washer,..something) as it just didn't fit right.

The pinch bolt on the engine case can be loosened with an offset box wrench which fits in nicely under the coolant valve. It only takes a few turns and the bolt-hole sleeve will slide right out. Just flip it around, pop it back in and tighten up the pinch bolt. The slider and bolt will now screw in and fit perfectly. HTH.

Steffan sent me a pic of the PROTOTYPE frame sliders for the K 1200 S. They're the best looking I've seen. Still a ways from being available, but I'm holding off buying any until I see how these turn out. 8)
