So, armed with the new Canon S5 camera, I visited the old port in the town of Chania in Western Crete.

Camera pros, may I have your sympathy, please ?

So, here goes :

The old port area has literally dozens of interesting shops

and buildings

coming closer with your megazoom you can observe more people

and time - beaten decors hiden by the outer walls

beautiful sunsets

coming even closer, a whole different world gets revealed where these 'people' become the protagonists on a shadow stage

hi, thanks for posting, but your linking system is hard to see.

to post images in our forum.

place an image tag like this: [img]
then place your link: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc26 ... G_0616.jpg

then immediately after close your image tag like this: [/img]

so sandwich your image address between two image tags like this:
[img]put%20your%20image%20address%20here[/img]

try it now, you can hit edit and correct your post...

I still think that you can't beat an SLR and if size is a problem, the likes of the Canon 400D is pretty good. Currently using a Canon 5D and a Canon 20D with a variety of glass.

I straightened up the pic from above that caught my eye and enhanced the colours slightly - good pic...!

Based on Shiva's recommendation, I bought one too. On the last day of our vacation, I slipped on a rock in the Swiss Alps and totalled it. Funny, today I got a bill from FNAC -after I told them to destroy it- (costs are same as a new one) for 67 €. I wonder if they repaired it or not.

Yep! I bought one as well. I reallyagonised about going to a compact camera without manual controls but I was drawn to the 28mm lens. So far results are very impressive and I have found a number of tricks to manipulate the programmed scene settings.

I don't have a problem with having less manual settings on a compact, it tends to be more the shutter lag that I find annoying and also the relative lack of iso control coupled with slow glass - resulting in less usability all round...

Take for instance these shots...

First - 50 second exposure on a tripod using a remote shutter release

Image

Second, indoor shot using a 24-70mm f2.8 lens at iso400 - no flash

Image

Third, moon shot using a 100-400mm lens at iso800@1/1000 sec on a tripod

Image

As for detail:

cool that you are sharing these images. I agree that you can't beat a DSLR, but considering the small size of today's digicams, and the fact that you can practically slip them in your pocket, make them very versatile, even though they are a compromise in portability...

The Canon G9 that I just got, is a feature-packed digicam, with a separate knob for ISO control and basically full control options and a beautiful 3" screen. :) S

Sounds good Shiva, the new gen of compacts is coming up fast. I do have a Pentax Optio which is waterproof to 2 metres or so, I tend to take it if I'm off roading or in rain... :D
