Farkling complete!

Postby 1bmwfan on Fri Jun 05, 2009 8:08 pm

Here's a little write up on how I added some nice, IMO, accessories to my GT. Enjoy!

It just wouldn't be right, afterall, for me not to do something to the GT.

Pretty easy stuff made easier with the accessibility of the bike itself.

I installed the Zumo 550, Autocom Active-Plus (kit 200), GXM-30 XM, SPOT messenger, Gerbing connections (F&R), Centech fuse panel, and bar risers. That's it. Done.

Here ya go.

Overview of the GXM-30, Zumo, SPOT.
Image

SPOT is in place via the RAM handlebar mount and arm that comes with the Zumo 550. The SPOT RAM cradle is from Cyclenutz.
Image

The Zumo is mounted with the stock BMW mount with the Touratech locking mount added to that.

The bar risers are by Heli Bar.

Everything was a direct bolt on with zero mods necessary except a realignment of the holes to secure the Touratech mount to the BMW mount.
Image

The GXM-30 is mounted via a ZTechnik Tech Mount.
Image

Autocom and Centech mounted with tons of space to spare under the passenger seat.
Image

Here you can see the relay that gets it's power via a tapped lead from the accessory socket. I did this to reduce wire run. It would be just as easy to run 2 wires to the front and hook in to the GPS connector with an available BMW "repair connector." Again, I went the shorter wire run method as the accessory socket is less than 12 inches below the relay location.

You can also see in this photo the front Gerbing connection and the rear passenger Autocom lead and Gerbing connection.
Image

Here is the passenger set up when in use.
Image

B2B mount with velcro. I planned to have it in the glove box but the cable ended up about 5 inches too short to close the cover properly without pulling the wire.
Image

Of course, push to talk.
Image

Jamie and I ran up to Tahoe the other day and all systems worked flawlessly. We had to stop to make a minor volume adjustment to Jamie's headset but that was it for the duration. We are both running custom molded ear plug speakers and it is just amazing how wonderful it all is with that set up.

Thanks for looking!

Check the SPOT (handheld satellite and communication device) link: http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=1100

The round thing to the left is the GXM-30 Sirius/XM antenna/receiver.

Man - that is an awesome job!!

Nicely done - I am about to embark on a similar mission transfering the same over from my RT, except for the SPOT.

Question - I do not want to mount my GXM on the handle bar and I do not want to cut a hole in the front below the windshield as others have done (which looks ok) but not what i want to do.

Is there room to mounting behind the IP as I did on the RT?

Very neat installation. I'm particularly impressed with the PTT; where did you get it from?

PTT is part of the Autocom set up. It is an Autocom part # 1457. This plugs in to the Autocom unit on one end and on the other end it splits, with one end being teh PTT and the other pluging in to the appropriate interface cable for the radio in use. Absolutely wonderful in use. Even while healed over it is usable. I rolled around a friend the other day while in a turn and just gave him grief as I drove by in the adjacent lane. Hee hee hee.

Outstanding job! I am new to the forum (and to BMW bikes!)...just bought an '09 K1300GT and I'm loving every minute of it. Anyway, I am particulatly interested in the GPS mount - you mention the Zumo using a stock BMW mount. Any idea where I can find one? The Zumo I bought a couple of years ago came with a Ram mount for the handlebars, but that was it. I've looked at Garmin online and a couple of other gadget sites and I'm not seeing anything that resembles what you have...or anything specific to BMW. I'd appreciate any insight or suggestions you might have.

Thanks and ride safe,

Just slide on down to your BMW dealer and get the Zumo mount that BMW offers and carries. You can direct mount your Zumo cradle to that and all would be fine. I chose to add the Touratech locking mount as well. Personal preference and absolutely not necessary.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks; I'm awaiting release of the Autocom digital with remote control. Leaflets lead you to believe it is available but local company say it is still very much in development. I don't suppose it is available Stateside?

Quite possibly the best paint job/paint match I've ever seen! It's a difficult color as it really changes based on angle and sun. I think they got it perfect!

To me, the bike now looks complete!

Great pics and write up too.
I just got a 07 GT and don't know where to begin.
I sorta got lost in the acronyms, but I would like to get a GPS and intercom system so my wife and I can talk.
We have not bought the helmets we like yet, but they will have Bluetooth tech. Does an intercom system allow the GPS to transmit to rider's helmet?
Do I get the GPS thru BMW? or can I order directly from supplier. What about the correct mount and locking device?
...and connections....
I really would like to tackle this myself like you did, but don't know where to start.
tks

This is Jim again,
BTW, I scrolled down and read more. Really nice paint job on the top box.
p.s. Have you ever had a rattle from your cruise control box under the left fender. Mine rattles like crazy when I'm riding and rattles when I tap on the box itself.

It can be daunting to wade through all the available options when it comes to communications, GPS, bluetooth, and all the interfacing that needs to occur to get quality sound. Probably too much to go through here.

I would definitely give http://www.rka-luggage.com/A01%20Products/prod.html these guys a call and talk to them. Richard can explain a lot of what can be done. I used something entirely different than what he offers but that was because I already had a lot of stuff so cost came in to use what I had versus invest in everything all over again.

Call 'em up, talk, it's a free call and Richard usually will talk as long as you need to understand what you can and can not do. Oh, and I have NO interest in this business. I am just a happy customer and recipient of his knowledge.

1st, great job! You've given me lots of ideas form my '11 GT... 2 weeks old now. :D

I have a question though. I may be misunderstanding, but wouldn't connecting the Centech to the Aux plug just add fuses to the Can-bus system?
