Having Trouble Logging In?

Postby SHIVA on Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:12 pm

If you're having trouble logging in, or stay logged in, please read this:

Please pay attention to which URL you're using.

You can view the same exact content on 5 web sites:
http://BMWSuperBikes.com/forum
http://BMW-K.com/forum
http://BMWRR.com/forum
http://BMWK1200S.com/forum
http://S1000RRForums.com/forum

You'll have a seamless experience if you avoid using the "www" for our URL, just use the addresses as they are shown above.

Many members provide links in their posts based on any combination of these URLs,
and if you aren't visiting the same address as the cookie that's been saved on your computer,
you'd have a problem being kept logged on or seeing new threads notification.

Also, if you have multiple browsers open when you log in, and you may have us open on one or more of those browser windows already, that may also cause a log in issue.

If you are an IE user make sure to upgrade to the latest version called IE9 if your operating system supports it.

At this time we can't grantee that all of our forums features will work with Opera or Safari.
However if you are visiting us on iPhone devices, we are TouchBB active.

The ultimate Internet browsers are Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome and both are free to download

http://www.mozilla.org/firefox
http://www.google.com/chrome

If the above doesn't help then do this:
Delete your bookmark for our forum and log out.
Make sure you only have one browser window open.
Pick which URL you like to use from now on,
go to one of the 5 above
and then bookmark it anew
and log in and save password
and if you always log in using that one particular URL you'll be fine!

Pay attention if you're being diverted from your selected URL to another one of our web addresses. If that happens, simply use the bookmark to bring yourself back to your preferred URL.

In IE8 or Internet Explorer 8 first set the Compatibility View:
IE 8 has a setting requirement called COMPATIBILITY VIEW. Go to
Tools > Compatibility View Settings > (and at the bottom select) Display All Websites in Compatibility View.

One last thing, Internet Explorer browser (IE) is now up to version 9, if you're still using older versions, please upgrade. Please go to:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/inte ... ts/ie/home

I had to request ANOTHER password reset this morning.
I have my browser set to remember my password, I have also set the login window to log me in automagically on each visit.
BUT !
When I get e-mail notification that a thread has been updated, I click on the link provided and the page pops up saying that I have been notified of an update and need to log in to read it.

Duhh, this should be SIMPLE, right ?
I am not coming here from a bookmark, I am coming here from a link that was composed and embedded into a mail message.
Why CAN'T it log me in automatically ?
Well, it can and it does, for about 1/2 hour.
Two hours later, the same old problem is back.

My guess ? I am getting dynamic IP address assignments from my server and this web site's server is insisting on remembering the old one(s).
As I said this is my "Guess" (-:
If I am anywhere CLOSE to being right it should be an easy fix - dynamic IP addresses are a reality that servers need to live with (within).
tnx,

there shouldn't be any issues to remaining logged in forever. the site works fine. I've been logged in for a couple of years.

try this, don't use www.

use http://bmwsuperbikes.com/forum (and not http://www.bmwsuperbikes.com/forum)

now, it's important to make sure that every time you visit the site you are in bmwsuperbikes.com (or whatever URL you choose), because if a link in a thread sends you to to BMWK1200S.com or BMW-K.com the system obviously will not remember your login, because you are now visiting the site from a different URL. And it's not IP based, it's cookie based.

Then it is probably the magic that composes the e-mail notifications that is at fault.

The most recent one to me was like this;
http://www.bmw-k.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 34&e=89934
(copy/pasted)

If that can be fixed (told where to go CORRECTLY) then things would probably work as advertised.

let me reiterate, the system works 100%. you are not following what the real issue is here, so bear with me? :)

We have 5 distinct URLs, each requires its own Cookie. Meaning if you have logged in with BMWRR.com and get a link to follow up a thread on BMW-k.com, you'll not remain logged in. it's not the site's fault, the cookie on your comp is for BMWRR and not BMW-K

Please pay attention to which URL you are visiting and if the URL matches the site you have logged in you'll always be logged in. If the URL doesn't match the cookie, you'll not be kept logged in. It's that simple.

I have a choice at some point in the future to merge all of our URLs into one, that will resolve some of this concern, however, it might cause new issues due to thousands of links already in use on our forum going to threads using any combination of our 5 web sites.

I'm sure this is as frustrating for you as it is for us, I don't know what would happen if you aliased them all to one place, I no longer do tech support and this wasn't my field when I did (-:

As users;
We receive e-mails with a composed link, we click on it.
The "right thing" doesn't happen.
This shouldn't have any dependencies on whether or not we have logged in by following a different link in the past, or if we are currently logged in, or not currently logged in.
From the user's POV that e-mailed link SHOULD WORK by going to the first unread posting in that thread.

This morning I was not logged in, I got an e-mail and followed the link.
OK, so I had forgotten my password and had to request a password reset.
Then I got in and read the update, logged out, closed the browser tab, a couple of minutes later I clicked on the e-mailed link again and WOW my browser opened up a new tab, I was logged in and right there in the thread again. Koowel, problem solved. So I logged out and closed that tab.
A couple of hours later I got another e-mail about the same thread, so I clicked on it and got the please log in to read it screen.

I will open a browser tab and log into http://www.bmw-k.com.
I will STAY logged in there and see if the next e-mailed link I get works.

tnx,

\R
PS I seem to be logged in on bmwsuperbikes.com right now, so I will log off from here and close this browser tab.

Read the first post carefully. If you log in every time with the same domain (for example http://bmwsuperbikes.com), have cookies enabled and if you use from home from own pc, then also select from log in page automatically log in every visit and there should not come any troubles.

Could you also put more specific location for your profile, please. Plain America is not good enough...
